1. Customer Service Lessons from An 82 Year Old

“Please can you come over and help organise my computer files” asked my 82 year old mother in law. “Of course Mog, my pleasure. I’ll be over tomorrow about 1:15 – 1:30.”

While driving the 5 minutes to her home, at 2:00 she rang.  “Yes, I’m coming, I’m sorry I was a bit delayed. Be right there” I said feeling guilty as hell.

The job wouldn’t have taken 15 minutes, but I got tea, muffins and a profusion of thanks. It was no effort at all really.

Later that afternoon while on the office phone, my cell rang. It went to message. My mother in law left a message to say thank you once again.

My initial reaction was “gee, she really didn’t have to do that. And a cell phone call to boot!” Ten minutes later it dawned on me how utterly lovely it was. How much I appreciated that little extra that she had done. IT made me feel special.

How different this was from my experience of sending out over 70 hand written cards with a gift of my new 101 Quick Tips book to a group of my clients the previous month. While I expected nothing in return, it still floored me that I had only received two thank you emails and a note from the 70.

Now I know an 82 year old grandmother has far more time on her hands than you or I with the 1001 demands on our attention.

Make time. Will you be a customer service leader and reap the rewards? Or simply one of the pack that has no time for the equivalent of good manners in business?


2. Archiving Individual Folders

Archiving older emails are brilliant. It’s like storing them in a trunk under your bed – they’re easily accessible, but out of your way.

You can turn archiving on in your Outlook (Tools>Options>Archive) if you don’t have it already on. Sorry, not in Outlook Express. Yes, Lotus has it.

If your company already has an archiving policy in place – here’s two handy tips:

  1. If you can’t find where your archives are stored:
    Right-click the Archive Folders folder in your Folder List. Click Properties for Archive Folders.
    Click Advanced, and then look at the File name box for where the data file location is.
  2. Do you have one or two folders you’d prefer more/less frequent archiving”? Here’s how:
    Select the folder that you want to change the frequency for. Right-click the folder. Select Properties. Select AutoArchive. On the File menu, click Archive.

3. Top Tip On Using Referrals
You're going to love this tip!

The next time you telephone someone that you've been referred to,

instead of saying: "Hi, this is {FIRST} and I was given your name by (referee)".

Say this:
"Hi, This is {FIRST} and I promised (referee name) that I would call you".
