Hire for attitude

Herb Kelleher, founder of Southwest Airlines (the second-largest airline in the world by number of passengers carried (and in 2007 it posted a profit for the 34th consecutive year), used to say, ‘Hire for attitude and train for skill.’

It is much easier to teach people technical skills and train them in the way your business operates than it is to change their attitude. Yet it is their attitude that will have the greatest effect on how they treat your customers. Some people are positive, enthusiastic and friendly. Some people enjoy working with other people. Some people like helping others. These are the people you want to hire to deal with your customers.
