It’s not about you

A speaker started a presentation talking about herself. And kept on talking about herself. Ten minutes on – it was still all ‘Me, me, me’. I walked out.

You must grab your audience straight away. Forget the thank yous and glad to be heres. Get their interest immediately with your first sentence, especially the younger generations brought up on snippets and fastpaced action.

So how do you do it?
Open with a startling statistic.
Begin with the most dramatic part of your opening story. It can be the ending – you continue by going back to the beginning and filling in detail.
Take them somewhere with you (back when; forward to).
Make the premise of your speech clear: how they’ll benefit from what they’ll learn.

Remember, talk always and only from your audience’s perspective.
