1. Don’t sweat the small stuff
Make concessions that only affect costs indirectly. By offering free training, extra services, an extended warranty, free delivery, longer payment terms, etc., you won’t sacrifice price but you will allow customers to think they are making a good deal.
2. Play it cool
Don’t let your emotions get the better of you. Manipulative people look for emotional responses to know their tactics are working.
3. Trading places
Try to put yourself in the shoes of your prospective customer. What would you expect from the negotiation? What would you consider a reasonable request? Use this perspective to assess and evaluate your customers’ demands.
4. Check the record
Talk to individuals who have negotiated with these people before. What are their tricks, strategies and manoeuvres? Now think of ways you can counter these tactics when they come up.
